About Sherilyn

intriguing stories of breakthrough

Sherilyn writes not only fiction, non-fiction, plays, and blogs, but she loves the outdoors as well. Holding a masters in writing from USC and a masters in literature from UCI, she teaches university English and writing.  Sherilyn lives with her husband near her two sons and daughter-in-law in Southern California.  She enjoys walking trails, water sports, and ecotourism.

Sherilyn cares about and served as a youth culture worker, especially with immigrants in schools and communities. As a professor, she facilitated a “Risky Business in Student Life” panel of professionals.  From this passion came her series with protagonist Gabriela, an endangered Latina medical doctor-in-the-making whose dreams may come at a greater cost than imagined.

Her “Faith” column features (“Easing Suffering with Faith,” “What a Difference a Bay Makes-One Denomination, Two Churches,” and over twenty others) appeared in the LA Times/Daily Pilot; “Seizing the Momentum,” “Finding the Balance,” and others were published in Orange Coast magazine. She authored “The Day Face Up” published in The Southern California Anthology, and she won the OC Presswoman ‘s award for “Best Column” in Tennis Talk. Her play Faux Pas was produced at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scotland.  Mother J’s Jailbird Blues, Kubad, and The Festival of the Hungry Ghosts found audiences at LA area venues including The Odyssey, The Cast, The Zephyr, The Tiffany, and USC.  She served assistant to the director and then assistant to the producer of John Rechy’s Tigers Wild, working with Sarah Jessica Parker.  Sherilyn presented papers on C. S. Lewis, Tolkien, G. B. Shaw, and Marilynne Robinson, at Conferences on Christianity in Literature in California and The Festival of Faith and Writing in Michigan.

As a young adult, Sherilyn helped many areas of Mexico with her church, then later participated in a tennis mission to India, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Hawaii.  Summers she coached tournament tennis players in Europe and Asia. Taking writing time in London, she attended the world premiere of a C. S. Lewis play and visited the author’s home near Oxford. She received a USC grant and an Iowa Visiting Artists invitation to serve as panelist on “The Visionary Role of Literature,” with Maxine Hong Kingston and Marsha Norman.  Concordia University Irvine sent her as faculty member and servant-leader to Shanghai, Shenzhen and Yunnan, China. With her family, she toured Europe, Alaska, Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, Colombia, the Dutch Antilles, and Israel.
