Gabriela Alma has a dream.  She tells no one because it’s impossible.  It’s impossible for a girl who lives in the midst of hard-core gang violence every day to become a medical doctor, so she does nothing.  She strikes out against the break-up of her family.

Every day of her life she’s not sure if she’s coming home alive or not. Because of that, she’s trained herself to fight.  Yet at heart she’s not a fighter, but a healer.

Can someone rise above her history to become someone even she’s afraid of, someone no one in her family would ever dream of becoming.  For her to admit this to herself seems crazy.  She’s tried to crush this dream, but she can’t push it down any longer.  She can’t stop this passion.

One day the unexplainable happens.  When a well-connected community center counselor invites her to go to Colombia and learn the ways of healing, she takes the chance and goes.  The dream starts to come true.

As it turns out, one medic mission is to rescue kidnapped girls.  She becomes enmeshed in the danger to become captive.  Not only is her dream crushed, but it may lead to her death.
