GABRIELA’S CHASE COVER REVEAL!!
The 2nd most important element of a book is its COVER! People do judge a book by its cover.
Designed by Sam Sutton, the novel cover depicts Gabriela in the semi-rainforest region outside of Cartagena, Colombia, the novel’s Part II setting. Unique to this original art project, the lush area wraps around the spine to the back cover village, while Gabriela’s hair and dress flow through the air.
Here Sam blends graphic art technique with some AI. He brings a signature cover design “glow!” Test readers have said, “it’s glowing!” His tone emanates energy, hopefulness, challenge, adventure, and suspense.
Sam’s influences for this cover are a Picasso sketch, modelo mujer, young woman, and the image of a woman athlete he once portrayed.
🎨 Artist Q&A: Meet Sam Sutton
We stopped Sam in the middle of his day designing university sportswear and event posters as the senior graphics designer in his own company, attending college, and competing on the wrestling team to talk with him about his work:
Q: When did you first start in graphic arts?
A: I first started in graphic design when I was in 8th grade. I downloaded Photoshop on my school computer and from that point on I fell in love with graphic design. I have always loved artwork and I love being able to make pieces that clients love!
Q: What are your life inspirations?
A: I look to lots of things for inspiration when I’m making content, art, or clothing, but I’m mostly inspired by the things of the past. I like to look back to old artwork, old graphic design, nature, and people. People and nature are always the most inspiring to me, so when I see old art that really hits a nerve, it always inspires me to remaster and refine the style or build a new look from scratch!
Q: Is your faith important to you?
A: My faith is the most important thing in my life. I am a Christian and a servant of God! I give my life up to God and let him lead me to the next big thing, or little, whatever is his plan. My life, soul, and everything about me is defined by my faith.
Q: How long have you had your own business?
A: I started my company when I was 17, the summer before my senior year of high school. I had a vision for a clothing brand and joined up with a buddy to make it happen. My company has evolved from the brand structure to a full custom merchandising company, and I can’t wait to see where it goes next!
Q: You’re in college in Texas. What are you majoring in?
A: I currently go to Tarleton State University in Stephenville, TX about 1.5 hours from Fort Worth. I am a finance major.
Q: How is your wrestling team doing?
A: My wrestling team is awesome and we’ve been a part of a movement to establish the first Division 1 NCAA wrestling program in Texas.
Q: Where were you raised? Is your family still there?
A: I was born and raised in Birmingham, Alabama and lived there for 18 years of my life. My parents still live in the house I grew up in. I also have an older brother who lives in Nashville and is an audio engineer. We love art.
Q: What’s next for you?
A: Summer 2025 my company is hosting 6+ wrestling events across the nation, so I will be all over making sure these run smoothly. I will be living in Miami, working for Normal Finance and running my business.
Q: Thank you, from your “fans”! Do you have anything to say to them?
A: It means the world that the things I worked hard on are appreciated and respected. I appreciate every single person who takes a second to look at this book cover.
