WHAT WE’RE LOVING NOW. . .
REAGAN: A Reagan scene of a time in his youth as a river lifeguard portrays his protective, courageous nature and how his skill watching river currents connects with his ability to perceive cultural changes. Other clips show young Reagan as an actor with a stint as a somewhat fiery head of the actors’ union. His horseback ride with Nancy Davis, destined to be his First Lady, in the idyllic green Malibu hills resonates. Later Reagan speaks out against global injustice. His famous call-to-action “Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this [Berlin] wall” brings history to life. This is an important film to see for its hopeful message of what was and what could be. . . I just found a newspaper clipping from when I was invited to and attended former Governor Reagan’s speech at Sacramento’s Youth and Government model legislature. Who would’ve thought.
HOMEGIRL’S PRAYER, PUBLISHING PEEK: Think good thoughts for my novel HOMEGIRL’S PRAYER at a crossroads between a traditional publisher and an indie publisher.
BOOKS: Check out The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by award-winning author James McBride set in Pottstown, Pennsylvania in the 1920s and ‘30s, and The Covenant of Water by Abraham Verghese located in southwest India. Also, read any of David Baldacci’s mysteries for substance. His Calamity of Souls set in 1968 in southern Virginia is a racially charged courtroom drama, along the lines of A Time to Kill but with more vivid characters and a nuanced plot.
